High Blood Pressure Prevention – February 2016 Muneris Prevention Newletter

The CDC estimates that 46 billion dollars was spent in the U.S. in 2013 for high blood pressure related claims.  About 1 of 3 U.S. adults—or about 70 million people—has high blood pressure.  Controlling High Blood Pressure is relatively easy and inexpensive, as a wave of blood pressure medications have gone generic over the last five years.  At Muneris Benefits, we help employers control healthcare expenses, and in most cases, 80% of all claims can be attributed to obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes – things that are preventable.

What Causes High Blood Pressure? Blood pressure tends to rise with age, unless you take steps to prevent it. Certain medical problems, medications and pregnancy can also raise blood pressure. Aside from older age, there are other specific factors that may put one more at risk, including being AfricanAmerican, overweight or male; having long-lasting stress; and engaging in unhealthy lifestyle habits such as eating too much salt, excessive alcohol consumption, not getting enough potassium, not exercising and smoking. High Blood Pressure Prevention is critical.
